This Week in Sports Social Media…..while we all enjoyed the extra day off this weekend, the sports social media world was not lacking in headlines. Sure there weren’t a ton of meaningful games or anything like that being played but we swear there’s a lot happening. First the week started off with another couple of Jays getting shipped to Houston where they somehow managed to pitch a no hitter after which the nations collective attention shifted away from baseball until 2020 and into other sports just underway or getting ready to kick off. And of course we love ourselves a little tennis and aren’t mad at the start of NFL training camps either but who can really blame us at GLORY for being extra excited about hoops where this week Canada Basketball gets ready for a World Cup and Drizzy blasted Trophies with the Trophy at OVO.
For those who witnessed the quick rise and dramatic, prolonged fall of Aaron Sanchez because of a blister that seemed to never go away, you’ll have to forgive them for scratching their heads this week after he was traded to Houston for a rack of bats and a bag of balls. Upon arrival to the Astros with teammate Joe Biagini, the former Jays combined for a no-hitter in their first appearance for their new team.
Rogers cup kicks off in TO
So with the lone Canadian team’s baseball season officially over, it was officially time to turn the page to more meaningful contests ahead…..enter the always fun Rogers Cup that has a great field this year that includes Serena Williams, Sloane Stephens and hometown favourite Bianca Andrescu amongst others. As matches are just getting underway, early social media posts in the week saw Genie spending some quality time with the kids while Bianca put everyone on notice that she plans to bring it for the hometown crowd.
LDT back at Chiefs camp
Checking in down south, the start of NFL training camps was buzzing this week too and sure he didn’t arrive with the flash of Jalen Ramsey who showed up in an armoured truck or Antonio Brown who flew in on a hot air balloon, but All-Pro O-lineman and McGill med school grad is in Kansas City Chiefs training camp with a big grin on his face. If you ask us, we’re calling the Chiefs to take it all the way to the Super Bowl in February so expect LDT to put in the work to protect Mahomes in his quest to dethrone 76 year old Tom Brady.
Canada Hoops reconvenes
Speaking of training camps, it’s never a true one but this weekend Canada Basketball’s Senior Men’s National Team got together for their annual/abbreviated one in TO where the team is preparing for a trip to China for this years FIBA World Cup. At stake aside from medals is a spot in the 2020 Olympics that will come with a top 7 finish so while the team doesn’t have much of it’s NBA talent on hand, we’re betting that new Head Coach Nick Nurse will find a way to get the most out of his guys and come home with their tickets stamped for Tokyo.

Larry OB shows up at OVO
Where does all this optimism for Canadian hoops come from you ask? Sure in Nick we trust but truth is we’re still high from the Raps Championship run like Drizzy who continued his celebration right through the weekends OVO Fest where he paraded the actual Larry O’Brien trophy front and centre while blasting Trophies. Yes OVO is known for it’s guest appearances but lets just say that Larry OB was our favourite surprise guest appearance since Diddy.
