After more than 30 years since it’s iconic release, the New Balance 997 is being reimagined rich with heritage by introducing a ‘Made in the USA’ capsule collection as a way to celebrate ‘Grey Day,’ the brand’s annual sneaker holiday.
Of the brands numerous silhouettes, the 997 has stood the test of time and remains a classic. First released in 1991 and designed by Steven Smith, the 997 has seen a number of iterations. However New Balance is remixing it’s legendary shoe by swapping out the trademark “N” logo for a more minimalist approach — a first for the brand.
As sneakerheads know, the colour grey is iconic to New Balance. Since the grey NB620 was released in the 80s, shoes from the 990 range have become synonymous with the colourway.
Over the years it has come to represent the fearless state of mind while paying homage to the brands independent spirit — It also happens to look good with just about everything. Through decades of culture shifts, New Balance knows “the drive for style remains.” Three styles of note are the 997, the 574, and the ROAV.
“Grey represents a fearless state of mind and unites New Balance’s global family of independents.”
This limited edition collection of MADE 997 features apparel and two twists on the classic: The New Balance M997GD1 and M997SGR.
What separates the shoes is the logo — or lack thereof. The 997GD1 has bid farewell to the recognizable “N” and instead sports an embossed “New Balance MADE in USA” on the saddle.

For those missing the familiar “N” the 997S will not disappoint. The kicks are hybrids: The OG design of the upper, cut from pigskin suede, is now paired with the cushioning support of the ENCAP REVEAL midsole. Both shoes have finishing details sporting suede, pebbled leather and mesh.
Outside of the capsule collection, the colour grey can be seen trickling into other lines for the brand. Most notably, Kawhi Leonards signature New Balance sneaker, the OMN1S, is being revamped in a similar grey colour.
