From Jan. 16 to 19 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, South Building the event will bring together 53,000 of the world’s leading products, companies and change-makers to get creative and consider the future and design.
Canada’s largest design exposition and conference brings under its incisive scope this year the transformative power that global minds, creators, changers, and dreamers wield. When a designer creates a new product or a piece of furniture, they also start a chain reaction that affects many of us, posing not just solutions to past woes, but also forging new realities. This is something that IDS recognizes and will be celebrating.
It seems fitting that this year’s theme, which propels us into the new decade, is the future itself. This is a year portending clarity of vision and firmer goals, a time when global socio-political matters become increasingly urgent. IDS20 will bring together the world’s leading designers, change-makers, and dreamers to give us an opportunity to explore how they are using technology and design to tackle social problems, and witness new roads toward brighter possibilities.
The international guest of honour is Yves Béhar, the San Francisco-based Swiss designer, entrepreneur and humanitarian. Béhar’s biography is impressive: he is the founder and chief designer of multidisciplinary design firm fuseproject, co-founder of smart locks and home services provider August Home, and co-founder of boutique co-working enterprise Canopy. Believing that the cornerstone of any business exists at the intersect of integrated product, digital, experience design and brand design, Béhar has received international acclaim for collaborating with renowned brands, and for performing tremendous humanitarian works.

You’ll be able to experience returning features such as Maker (a spotlight of artisanal North American studios creating limited pieces) and Studio North & Prototype (a marketplace of custom collections), the IDS20 Conference, which will open up meaningful conversations based on the themes of Business of Design, Future of Work, and Future of Living and Technology.
